Region 4 dominates as Harper edges DuPage for NJCAA championship

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - Runners from Region 4 were all over John Hunt Park for the 2023 NJCAA Men's Cross Country Championships, and the region absolutely dominated in the Division III race. Harper College claimed the school's ninth national title with region foes College of DuPage and Joliet Junior College also in the top-four. In all, 34 runners from Region 4 competed in the Division III and Division II races.

Harper College, which had won eight straight national championships from 2011 to 2018, posted 53 team points to extend the region's streak of national titles to three in a row after Joliet Junior College won in 2021 and the College of DuPage in 2023. The Chaparrals took national runner-up honors with 97 points, while the Wolves were fourth with 143 points. Freshman Kevin Diedrich of COD claimed an individual runner-up finish, crossing the finish line nine seconds after the winner in 26:10.4. He was joined on the First Team NJCAA All-American list by Harper's Albert Szewczyk in fourth (26:29.7) and Joliet's Andrew Ciarlette in fifth (26:54.7). Also earning All-American recognition were the Hawks Owen Whalen (7th/27:02.2), Marcos Jaimes (10th/27:14.5), and Jose Morales (14th27:31.7). (Recaps: NJCAA | Harper)

In the Division II race, Carl Sandburg College's Allan Kipruto was the region's top finisher with a time of 27:02.8 to place 60th overall.
