Former City Colleges of Chicago Women’s Basketball Player Claims Award from WNBA’s Chicago Sky

CHICAGO – Dereniece Moton (Senn H.S.), a 2019 Wilbur Wright College graduate and two-year member of the Rams’ women’s basketball team, received a $1,000 scholarship from the WNBA’s Chicago Sky at halftime of its game on Wednesday.

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released its list of All-Americans for the 2018-19 basketball season, and 12 student-athletes representing NJCAA Region IV were recognized. The group includes six each in men's and women's basketball, with four First Team All-Americans, one second team honoree, four third team selections, and three honorable mention accolades. Highland Community College, Madison College, and Rock Valley College led all scores with two selections each.

Rivals Moraine Valley, South Suburban meet in NJCAA DII National Tournament

Separated by just 15 miles, rivals Moraine Valley Community College and South Suburban College both traveled nearly 600 miles to Harrison, Arkansas, for a chance to compete in the 2019 NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament, and eventually found themselves matched up in the consolation bracket. The #4-seeded Cyclones and the #8-seeded Bulldogs each lost their tournament opener, and after a consolation bracket victory, squared off for a chance to play for seventh place. In the end, MVCC finished eighth in the nation and SSC was not far behind.

Two players stood out above the rest when it came to NJCAA Region IV Division II women's basketball, and as a result, Moraine Valley Community College's Julia Ruzevich and McHenry County College's McKaylie Krey were named the Players of the Year in Districts D and L, respectively. The sophomore tandem headline the NJCAA Region IV Division II Women's Basketball All-Region Teams, and are joined on the region's list of All-American nominees by Sierra Sanders of Wilbur Wright College, Danisha Maggette of South Suburban College, and Bryant & Stratton College teammates Maddie McCoy and Kijanna Rogers. Moraine Valley Community College, which won the District D championship, led all teams with three all-region selections, while District L champ South Suburban College, Bryant & Stratton College, and McHenry County College each had two players listed.

When the 2019 NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Championships open on Tuesday, March 19 in Harrison, Arkansas, Region IV will boast two teams with legitimate title chances. Moraine Valley Community College will begin play as the #4 seed, while South Suburban College was awarded the #8 seed in the 16-team field.

SUGAR GROVE, ILL. - When the dust finally settled on the 2019 Region IV Division II Women's Basketball Tournament, Moraine Valley Community College and South Suburban College were left standing as District D and District L, respectively. The top-seeded Cyclones prevailed over second-seeded McHenry County College 89-70, while second-seeded South Suburban College topped defending Region IV champ and top-seeded Bryant & Stratton College 71-65 on Saturday at Waubonsee Community College.

Highland Community College sophomore Lakeita Chappel proved over and over again that she belonged at the top of the list, and as a result was named the Player of the Year and leads the list of the 2018-19 NJCAA Region IV Division I All-Region Team. Chappel is joined by Lamichael Dean of Kennedy-King College and Breanna Scheidegger of Sauk Valley Community College as the region's three All-American nominees. The Cougars, who repeated as Region IV champions, are tied with Skyhawks for the most entries on the all-region team with three each, followed by two from Malcolm X College.

Repeat champions as Highland claims another Region IV Division I title

JOLIET, ILL. - The Highland Community College women's basketball team successfully defended their crown with a 75-65 defeat of Sauk Valley Community College to claim the 2019 Region IV Division I Women's Basketball Tournament Championship on Monday at Joliet Junior College. The top-seeded Cougars topped the second-seeded Skyhawks for the second consecutive year and have won three of the last four Region IV Division I tournaments.

The stellar collegiate career of Rock Valley College Madi Hecox took another giant leap after the sophomore guard was named the Player of the Year for a second consecutive season as she again headlines the list of the 2018-19 NJCAA Region IV Division III All-Region Team. In addition, Hecox, along with Rachel Dumoulin of Elgin Community College and Aniah Wiliams of Madison College, will all received the region's All-American nominations. The Golden Eagles, which won its seventh Region IV title in the last eight years, tied Joliet Junior College for the most all-region selections with three.

Golden Eagles soar again, earn Region IV DIII three-peat

PALATINE, ILL. - The Rock Valley College dynasty machine continued after capturing their third consecutive championship at the 2019 Region IV Division III Women's Basketball Tournament with a narrow 68-63 victory over Elgin Community College on Monday. The top-seeded Golden Eagles held off a second half rally from the third-seeded Spartans to earn their first title under first year coach Taylor Ignoto. The Rockford-based program has won seven of the last eight Region IV crowns.

Sanders of Wilbur Wright earns NJCAA Player of the Week nod

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named Wilbur Wright College's Sierra Sanders as the Division II Women's Basketball Player of the Week for February 11-17 (Week 14). The award is the first such honor for Sanders, and the first this season for the Rams.

The National Junior College Athletic Association has named the College of Lake County's Hannah Raupach the Division II Women's Basketball Player of the Week for November 12-18 (Week 3). The award is the first of its kind for Raupach, as well as for the Lancers program this season.
