23 Winter 2023-24 Region 4 Student-Athletes earn NJCAA All-American accolades

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has released its list of All-Americans for the 2023-24 winter sports season, and 23 student-athletes representing Region 4 were recognized. The group includes six from men's basketball and women's basketball, four in women's bowling and men's wrestling, and three in men's bowling. There are ten first team recipients, two second team honorees, five third team selections, and six honorable mention distinctions. The student-athletes represent ten Region 4 institutions.

Triton defends Great Lakes District title, Region 4 places four All-Americans

FLINT, MICH. & COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA - Triton College successfully defended its 2023 district title when it rode four individual championships to claim the 2024 NJCAA Great Lakes District Wrestling Championship by eight points. The Trojans, ranked #9 in the latest NJCAA Wrestling Poll, racked up 183.0 points to clip second place Southwestern Michigan College at 175.0. Harper College was third with 147.5 points, followed by Morton College in fourth (90.5), and Joliet Junior College in ninth (57.0). In addition to Triton's four titles, the Wolves earned one individual championship and all of Region 4 qualified 33 wrestlers for the national tournament. Tim Duggan of Triton College was again awarded the Great Lakes District Coach of the Year and NWCA Coach of the Year.

Triton takes home Great Lakes District title to end 25-year drought

The 2023 NJCAA Great Lakes District Wrestling Championships was a two horse race between rivals Triton College and Harper College, and in the end, the Trojans snapped a 25-year drought with their first district title since 1998. Triton College finished with 151.0 points to best the Hawks by five (146.0) on their home mats on Saturday, February 18. Both team's entered the meet ranked in the top ten of the NJCAA Wrestling Poll. Triton College registered five individual champions, while Harper College stood atop the podium in two classes and Bryant & Stratton College in one.

Harper wrestles to Great Lakes District championship

PORT HURON, MICH. - With champions in half of the weight classes, Harper College was the clear-cut winner at the 2022 NJCAA Great Lakes District Wrestling Championship hosted by St. Clair County College on February 19. The Hawks amassed 149.0 points to out-distance themelves from second place Triton College at 121.0 point and claimed their fourth consecutive district title. (NOTE: There was no district tournament in 2021 due to Covid-19 Pandemic.) Other Region 4 members Joliet Junior College placed fifth with 65.5 points, followed by Bryant & Stratton College in sixth at 63.0 points, and Morton College in tenth with 8.5 points.

In a season unlike any other, Triton College and Joliet College were two of six programs to represent the North Central District (Region 4) at the 2021 NJCAA Wrestling Championships in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Trojans amassed 29 points to finish 18th overall, while the Wolves placed 29th with a dozen points.

Harper edges Triton, Joliet to secure third consecutive North Central District title

RIVER GROVE, ILL. - The Harper College wrestling team maintained its place atop the podium by winning the 2020 NJCAA North Central District Championship at Triton College on February 22. The Hawks, who entered as the two-time defending district champs, racked up 148.5 points to earn a 31-point victory over Triton College with 117.5 points. Joliet Junior College placed third at 91.0 points.

Harper claims second straight North Central District title, sends ten to nationals

MUSKEGON, MICH. - For the second consecutive year, the Harper College wrestling team was the most dominant squad on the mats at the NJCAA North Central District Championship hosted by Muskegon Community College (MI) on February 17. The Hawks posted 142.0 points to finish 26 points better than the second place and host Jayhawks. Triton College finished third with 105.5 points, while Joliet Junior College placed sixth overall with 71.5 points.

Harper dominates North Central District meet, wins team title over Joliet

Harper College flexed some serious muscle at the North Central District Meet, winning the team title by more than 40 points on February 11 at Triton College. The Hawks collected 134.0 total points to place one spot better than Joliet Junior College at 92.5 points.

At the North Central District wrestling meet, Harper College finished second in the team standings behind Lincoln College, while Triton College placed fourth. The Hawks will send nine wrestlers - including 125-pound champion Ian Mullen - to the NJCAA National Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on February 24-25. The Trojans advanced six wrestlers.
