McHenry County uses five flight titles to claim Region 4 championship

PALOS HILLS, ILL. - McHenry County College is back on top of the Region 4 women's tennis mountain after claiming the 2023 Region 4 Division I Women's Tennis Tournament crown on October 13-14 at Moraine Valley Community College. The Scots, who had not won since completing back-to-back championship runs in 2019 and 2020, registered 22.0 points to beat out the second place Cyclones on their home courts. Moraine Valley Community College had 13.5 points, followed by Sauk Valley Community College in third with 9.0 points. Oakton College sophomore Zarina Sayed was the Tournament's Most Valuable Player, and McHenry County College's Jim Stockwell took home Region 4 Coach of the Year honors.

Sayed, who lost in the Flight #1 finals as a freshman in 2022, defeated Anne Oshana of Elgin Community College by a 6-1, 6-1 tally to take the top individual honor. McHenry County College went on to win four the remaining five flights, with Elaina Hibbeler (Flight #2), Sophia Davidson (Flight #4), Elle Lagerstrom (Flight #5), and Alivia Adams (Flight #6) all coming away victorious in their respective brackets. Allyson English of MVCC was the Flight #3 winner via forfeit.

In doubles, Moraine Valley Community College came through with championship wins by Izabella Slezakova & Victoria Maratea in Flight #1 and English & Maya Morris in Flight #2. McHenry's Adams and Guadalupe Martinez took Flight #3 for the Scots.

McHenry County College, as well as Oakton's Sayed, MVCC's English, Slezakova, Maratea, and Morris, will represent Region 4 at the 2024 NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships in Tyler, Texas, from May 4-8.
