Harper runs to second NJCAA national championship as Region 4 dominates the field

UTICA, NEW YORK - Every where you looked during the 2023 NJCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships from May 11-13, athletes from Region 4 programs were dominating the competition. The end result: a second national championship for Harper College and top three finishes for the College of DuPage and Joliet Junior College, as well as numerous individual awards. The Hawks claimed first title since 2011 with 138.5 points, with the two-time defending champion Chaparrals in second at 96.0 points and the Wolves in third with 77.0 points. (Recap: NJCAA | Harper)

Harper College racked up their giant lead with seven golf medal winning efforts. Lilly Alberts set a meet record of 2:16.64 to cross the finish first in the 800m, while Fiona Metzo was tops in the 1500m. The Hawks swept the relays with first place finishes in the 400m, 1600m, and 3200m events, and were also bolstered by two victories in field events. Samira Rosenfeld was tops in the high jump and Lily Wintergerst flew the highest in the pole vault. In addition, Harper College had one runner-up finish in the pole vault by Chloe Wintergerst, as well as a pair of third place finishes and three fourth place results.

DuPage wrapped up their efforts with five runner-up honors and two third place finishes, while Joliet capped its first year as a track & field program with five runners-up and two bronze medalists.

During the event, former College of DuPage head coach Jane Vatchev was named to the 2023 NJCAA Track & Field Coaches Hall of Fame.
