13 Region IV Winter Student-Athletes Earn NJCAA All-American

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has released its list of All-Americans for the 2019-20 winter sports season, and 13 student-athletes representing NJCAA Region IV were recognized. The group includes seven from women's basketball, six from the men's basketball, and one wrestler, with six First Team All-Americans, two second team honorees, three third team selections, and two honorable mention accolades. All 13 student-athletes represented 13 different Region IV schools.

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has announced the cancellation of the 2020 spring sports seasons, as well as the cancellation of the remaining winter championships. The announcement comes amid the worldwide COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

Having outlasted the competition in region and district play, three women's basketball teams are ready to represent Region IV at their respective national tournaments. Rock Valley College will not only compete in, but also host, the 2020 NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championships from March 12-14 in Rockford, Illinois, while Bryant & Stratton College and Kankakee Community College will play in the 2020 JCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championships in Port Huron, Michigan, from March 17-21. All three teams return to the national stage for the first time since 2018 after all failed to qualify in 2019.

PALOS HILLS, ILL. - In a repeat of the 2018 season, Kankakee Community College and Bryant & Stratton College claimed 2020 Region IV Midwest District Tournament Championships on Saturday at Moraine Valley Community College. The top-seeded Bobcats won their second title in three years with a 65-59 win over #2 Black Hawk College in the NJCAA Midwest District L (Region 4B) final, while #3-seeded Kankakee Community College became NJCAA Midwest District B (Region 4A) champs for the 21st time by taking down #1 and host Moraine Valley Community College, 67-61.

Following a vote of region coaches, sophomore guard Alyssa Iverson of McHenry County College and freshman forward Kirsten Kamholz of Moraine Valley Community College were the two highest vote-getters and were named Region IV Players of the Year in Midwest District D (Region 4A) and Midwest District B (Region 4B) as the 2020 Division II Women's Basketball All-Region IV Teams were announced. Iverson, a 5'7" product of Harvest Christian Academy (IL) led the region in scoring at 27.0 points per game, while also posting 4.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.0 steals. Kamholz, a 5'10" native of Orland Park, Illinois, racked up 17.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.4 steals, and 1.9 assists. They are joined by Kylah Collins of the College of Lake County, South Suburban College's Diamond Stallworth, La'Janique Perry-Ellis of Bryant & Stratton College, and Waubonsee Community College Katie Beebe as the region's NJCAA All-American nominees.

The numbers may not jump off the page like other current and previous winners, however, the ability to control a game was undeniable for Malcolm X College freshman Jada McCurdy, who was the Region IV Player of the Year as the top vote-getter on the 2020 Division I Women's Basketball All-Region IV Team. The 5'2" guard from Chicago, Illinois, averaged 9.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 4.9 steals per game as she filled the stat sheets on a nightly basis for the eventual Region IV champion Hawks. McCurdy led the region in steals and was seventh in assists. She finished the year with one double-double. McCurdy, along with teammate Claudine Hurt and Kennedy-King College's Diamonie McKinney, received the region's NJCAA All-American nominations.

Malcolm X returns to top of Region IV after five year hiatus

JOLIET, ILL. - Five years since their last championship, the Malcolm X College women's basketball team is back on top after claiming the 2020 Region IV Division I Tournament title Monday night with a 70-60 defeat of Sauk Valley Community College at Joliet Junior College. The region championship is the tenth in program history and seventh since 2003, the most of any Region IV Division I teams.

After dominating the competition for much of the second half of the season, Joliet Junior College sophomore Lynese Johnson was the top vote-getter and headlines the 2020 Division III Women's Basketball All-Region IV Team as the Region IV Player of the Year. The 6'1" forward from Bolingbrook, Illinois, averaged a double-double of 17.1 points and 11.2 rebounds, along with 3.0 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 1.4 steals. The one-time NJCAA DIII Player of the Week and three-time Region IV DIII Player of the Week ranks among the top 15 in the region for points, rebounds, and blocks. She finished the year with six double-doubles. Johnson, along with Rock Valley College's Hannah Malcomson and Madison College's Aniah Williams, were recognized as the region's NJCAA All-American nominees.

Rock Valley holds off Madison for fourth straight Region IV title

GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - The well-oiled machine that is Rock Valley College women's basketball once again yielded a championship trophy, with the Golden Eagles defeating Madison College 76-64 to win the 2020 Region IV Divison III Tournament on Sunday at the College of DuPage. Top-seeded RVC has won four consecutive Region IV crowns and has finished atop the region in eight of the last night years.

Joliet's Johnson nabs NJCAA Player of the Week accolade

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named Joliet Junior College's Lynese Johnson as the Division III Women's Basketball Player of the Week for January 27-February 2 (Week 11). The award is the first such honor for Johnson, and the first this season for the Wolves. Johnson also earned Region IV Division III Player of the Week recognition, marking the second time in three weeks.

McHenry's Iverson tabbed as NJCAA Player of the Week

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named McHenry County College's Alyssa Iverson as the Division II Women's Basketball Player of the Week for January 20-26 (Week 10). This is the first national honor for Iverson, and the first this season for the Scots. Iverson was also named Region IV Division II - District L Player of the Week for the same time period, marking her third time receiving that distinction this season.

Waubonsee's Beebe averages triple-double, scores NJCAA DII Player of the Week

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named Waubonsee Community College's Katie Beebe the Division II Women's Basketball Player of the Week for November 18-24 (Week 3). The award is the second such honor for Beebe, who took home the same recognition in Week 5 of her freshman season last year, and the first for the Chiefs in 2019-20.
