Venditti becomes third Waubonsee player selected for NJCAA weekly award
The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named Waubonsee Community College's Tyler Venditti as the Division III Pitcher of the Week for May 6-12 (Week 16). The honor is the first of its kind for Venditti, and the third this season for the Chiefs, who also saw Jordan Ishman win pitcher of the week in Week 13 and Gavin Lovesky take home player of the week accolades in Week 8.
Venditti, a freshman from Geneva, Illinois, racked up a pair of wins and 16 strikeouts to help Waubonsee Community College reach the Region IV Division III Tournament finals. In a 13-11 win over top-seeded Rock Valley College, the righthander worked four and two-thirds innings and allowed two unearned runs on five hits, while striking out seven. Three days later he took the mound in the championship game against defending national champion Oakton Community College with the Chiefs facing elimination. Venditti limited the Owls to five runs - two of which were earned - on five hits and five walks as he tossed eight-plus innings. He fanned nine batters to help Waubonsee earn a 6-5 win and force a winner-take-all second championship.
Venditti and the Chiefs finished the season with a record of 30-23.
