Triton avenges 2023 loss to win third Region 4 title in four years

FREEPORT, ILL. - One year after a losing to Highland Community College in the title game, Triton College avenged the loss on the #2-seeded Cougars home court with a 93-75 win to claim the 2024 NJCAA Region 4 Division I Men's Basketball Tournament championship. The top-seeded Trojans have won four of the six region titles since moving to Division I for the 2018-19 season. Guard Amar Augillard was named the Region 4 Tournament Most Valuable Player, while Brian Burns took home the Region 4 Coach of the Year award. (Recap: Triton)

Triton College opened postseason with a resounding 120-70 win over #8-seeded Wilbur Wright College, and followed with a 94-75 victory in the semifinals against #4-seeded Kankakee Community College. In the championship game, the Trojans sprinted out to a 49-27 halftime lead and held off Highland Community College (22-11) for the 18-point win. Augillard hit four 3-pointers en route to 30 points, while AJ Dixon had 15 points and Dylan Williams added 18 points to join their teammate on the All-Tournament Team.

The win advanced Triton College to the NJCAA Midwest District Championship against Moberly Area Community College on March 16 in River Grove, Illinois. The Trojans, ranked #7 in the NJCAA Division I Poll, trailed the #19-ranked Greyhounds by a dozen at halftime, but rallied in the second half to claim an 84-81 win and a berth at the national tournament. The 2024 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championships (aka The Tournament) runs March 24-30 in Hutchinson, Kansas. Triton College (31-2) was awarded the tournament's #7-seed and a first round bye. The Trojans will play a second round game on Monday, March 25 against the winner of Sunday's first round matchup between #10-seed Trinity Valley Community College (26-7) and #23-seed Georgia Highlands College.
