18 Fall 2023 Region 4 Student-Athletes earn NJCAA All-American accolades

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has released its list of All-Americans for the 2023-24 fall sports season, and 18 student-athletes representing Region 4 were recognized. The group includes six from men's cross country, five in women's volleyball, three from women's cross country and women's soccer, and one from men's soccer. There are eight first team recipients, seven second team honorees, and three honorable mention distinctions. The student-athletes represent eight Region 4 institutions.

Defending champs Prairie State nearly survive pool play at NJCAA Championships

TUCSON, ARIZ. & GASTONIA, NC - Three teams represented Region 4 at NJCAA national tournaments to conclude the 2023 fall season. Defending Division II national champion Prairie State College went 1-1 in pool play, but joined Rock Valley College in the list of teams unable to advance into the bracketed quarterfinal round in the desert. Meanwhile, Harper College lost a consolation match in penalty kicks and went 0-2 at the Division III tournament along the east coast.

Lekic, Lima lead Truman to first Region 4 title

CHICAGO, ILL. & OTTUMWA, IOWA - Harry S. Truman College made their return to the soccer pitch a highly successful one in 2023, culminating in a NJCAA Region 4 Division I Men's Soccer Championship on October 28. The Falcons rolled to a 9-0 win over defending champion Malcolm X College. Freshman Bekir Lekic was named Region 4 Tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring a hat trick, while Maciej Orlowski earned Region 4 Coach of the Year honors.

Prairie State holds off Rock Valley for second Region 4 title

MADISON, WISC. - The defending NJCAA Division II men's soccer national champions accomplished something in 2023 they were unable to do the year prior: win the Region 4 Division II Tournament. Top-seeded Prairie State College held off upset-minded and #6-seed Rock Valley College with a 3-2 win on November 4 at Madison College to claim their first Region 4 crown since 2019. The Pioneers, who lost in last year's region finale before going on a memorable run to the national championship, were led by Region 4 Tournament Most Valuable Player Leo Dutra. Carlos Reyes received the Region 4 Coach of the Year award.

JOLIET, ILL. & AUSTIN, MINN. - The Harper College men's soccer team has a flair for the dramatic. The Hawks went to penalty kicks and won...twice...to claim the 2023 Region 4 Division III Men's Soccer Tournament championship and then again for the NJCAA Midwest District Championship. On Saturday, October 21, second-seeded Harper College got past top-seeded and host Joliet Junor College 5-4 in PK's after finishing 1-1 through two overtimes. Sophomore Ramon Orozco was named Region 4 Tournament Most Valuable Player and first year coach Vlad Gacanovic earned Region 4 Coach of the Year.

REGION 4 DOMINANCE: Prairie State wins first national title with 1-0 defeat of rival Morton

TUCSON, ARIZ. - Two schools separated by roughly 30 miles traveled some 1,800 miles to set up an improbable all-Region 4 matchup in the NJCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship, and in the end, Prairie State College won their school's first national title in any sport with a 1-0 decision over Morton College. The rematch of the Region 4 Championship was decided by freshman Josh Matiscik's game-winning goal to send the 11th-seeded Pioneers past the fourth-seeded Panthers.

Aguilera-Guillen leads Malcolm X to first Region 4 title

CHICAGO, ILL. - The NJCAA Region 4 Division I Men's Soccer Tournament was a single game between City of Chicago schools Kennedy-King College and Malcolm X College, who met on October 29 with a spot in the district tournament on the line. In the end, it was all Hawks as Malcolm X College blew past the Statesmen 12-0 to claim their first Region 4 championship. Sophomore Eduardo Aguilera-Guillen was named Region 4 Tournament Most Valuable Player, with coach Jesse Rosen receiving Region 4 Coach of the Year honors.

Golden goal secures fifth Region 4 title for Morton College

CICERO, ILL. - Forward Rafael Silverio came through in the clutch with a 91' golden goal that won Morton College the 2022 NJCAA Region 4 Division II Men's Soccer Tournament Championship with a 2-1 overtime victory over Prairie State College on November 6. The win gave the Panthers their fifth Region 4 title in the past nine years. Silvero was awarded the Region 4 Tournament Most Valuable Player, while coach Juan Franco took home Region 4 Coach of the Year accolades for the fourth time.

THREE-PEAT: Harper keeps Region 4 crown by holding off Madison

MADISON, WISC. - Three goals in the second half propelled Harper College to a third straight NJCAA Region 4 Division III Men's Soccer Tournament Championship as they defeated Madison College by a 4-3 final on October 22. The second-seeded Hawks received two goals from freshman Aaron Bustamante, who was named the Region 4 Tournament Most Valuable Player. Head coach Dan Klaus, who took over the program prior to the start of the 2022 season, took home Region 4 Coach of the Year honors.

Harper College repeats with second Region 4 title in 2021 calendar

LaSALLE, ILL. - The 2021 calendar has proven to be extremely special for the Harper College men's soccer team, who followed a highly successful spring season with another championship run this fall. The Hawks used a 4-2 defeat of Illinois Valley Community College to claim the 2021 NJCAA Region 4 Division III Men's Soccer Tournament and successfully defend their 2020 title earned in an altered spring season. Freshman midfielder Jonathan Rivas was named Region 4 Tournament Most Valuable Player, while Andre Watson earned Region 4 Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

RIVER GROVE, ILL. & WICHITA, KAN. - The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced that a non-collegial event at the 2021 Region 4 Division II Men's Soccer Tournament Championship would result in a double-forfeit between top-seeded Prairie State College and second-seeded Triton College. As a result, fourth-seeded Carl Sandburg College was awarded the Region 4 (Midwest District) title and automatic berth into the national tournament.
