Joliet's Ramirez-Quintero wins women's national title, Triton, Harper lead men's contingent at national championships

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA - Region 4 was well-represented once again at the NJCAA Men's Wrestling Championships and the NJCAA Women's Wrestling Invitational on March 7-8. Joliet Junior College's Katie Ramirez-Quintero claimed the national title in the 131-pound division, leading the Wolves to a ninth place finish overall. On the men's side, Harper College placed third in Division III, while Triton College was 11th in Division I. In all, nine Region 4 wrestlers earned NJCAA All-American honors. Ramirez-Quintero earned a thrilling 6-5 victory over Avery Mohr of Iowa Central Community College in the title bout to win the first national title in women's wrestling for Joliet Junior College, as well as Region 4. Teammate Eliana Balderrama came through with a fifth place finish (138) to help JJC rack up 57.0 points. Indian Hills Community College won the team title with 294.5 points. Morton College was 14th with 24.0 points and was led by a fifth place finish (124) from Jimena Serna.

In the men's portion of the weekend, Harper College reeled in 29.0 points to secure third in their division, while Joliet Junior College wasn't far behind with 16.5 points in seventh place. The Wolves got a sixth place finish from Paul Kadlec (165), and the Hawks were led by Ali Adel (197), who also placed sixth overall. Triton College's 67.0 points were good for 11th in Division I, which also saw Bryant & Stratton College place 49th overall with 5.5 points and Morton College in 52nd place overall with 4.0 points. The Trojans tallied four wrestlers to reach the medal stand. Ashton Hayhurst (149) earned a fourth, Ghee Rachal (197) took 5th after a 4-2 win over Harper's Adel, Ryan Boersma (285) was also fifth, and Mustafa Salimi (174) finished sixth.
