McHenry, Illinois Valley earn resounding Region IV Women's Tennis Championships

PALOS HILLS & GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - A pair of champions were crowned on October 12, with both doing so in run-away fashion as the 2019 Region IV Division I & Division III Women's Tennis Championships were claimed by McHenry County College and Illinois Valley Community College, respectively. The Scots tallied 19.5 points to distance themselves from runner-up Moraine Valley Community College by 7.5 points, while the Eagles registered 17.0 points and defeated second place College of DuPage by seven.

Division I (Hosted by Moraine Valley community College in Palos Hills, IL)

McHenry County College claimed six of the nine flight championships en route to claiming their first national tournament appearance since 2002. The Scots will be joined by the Cyclones and Sauk Valley Community College as automatic qualifiers to the 2020 NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships in Tucson, Arizona, from May 3-8, 2020. Bryant & Stratton College picked up the other three flight titles, with Region IV Most Valuable Player Desiree Ahlberg leading the effort. The freshman from Malmo, Sweden defeated Brooke Zielke of MVCC without dropping game in the Flight #1 championship. She then paired with Flight #2 champ Valentina Kukuruzovic, who also did not drop a game in her title match, to down the top tandem from SVCC for the Flight #1 Doubles crown. McHenry's Gabbi Barnvos (Flight #3), Kyleigh Kessler (Flight #4), Elizabeth Lakeland (Flight #5), and Morgan Paaske (Flight #6) all finished atop their respective brackets, with doubles titles also going to MCC in Flight's #2 and #3.

Jim Stockwell of McHenry County College named the Region IV Coach of the Year, and Sauk Valley Community College sophomore Adela Bajramoska was chosen for the Sportsmanship Award.

Division III (Hosted by College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL)

Illinois Valley Community College fell one flight shy of sweeping the entire 2019 bracket. They, along with the runner-up Chaparrals, will compete in the 2019 NJCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships in Peachtree City, Georgia, from November 1-3. Freshman Michelle Windy took home the top singles title in a highly-competitive match against Rachel Hofstetter of COD, and then joined forces with fellow first year Nena Perry to win the Doubles Flight #1 championship in an 11-9 tiebreaker. For her efforts, Windy, a product of Peru, Illinois, was selected Region IV Most Valuable Player. Alison McKenny, a freshman from COD, was the lone player not in an IVCC uniform to be crowned champion after finishing atop the Singles Flight #2 bracket.

Julie Milota of Illinois Valley Community College was named the Region IV Coach of the Year.
